Beginning Theatrical Jazz

Instructor ~ Tessy Tabish Brown

Jazz dance is a dance technique and style that first emerged in the United States in the early twentieth century. ... Both genres build on African American vernacular styles of dancing that emerged with jazz music. Vernacular jazz dance includes ragtime dances, Charleston, Lindy hop, mambo and modern.

In this class we will start with warming up with a series of stretching all body movement and isolated movements. Isolations involve moving one part of the body while the rest of the body remains still. We will practice suspension which is moving through positions instead of stopping and balancing in them. You will also learn a variety of fun steps with the encouragement and freedom to make each step your own by adding your personality into it. Jazz steps include basic turns, including chains, piques, pirouettes, jazz square step and some fun easy jumps and leaps. This will be a fun class for all ages. These moves will be modified for the space and floor type that each participant has available. We will end with a cool down stretch.

Tuesdays 5:00 - 6:00pm

1 hour class once a week for 4 weeks.

Membership is for 4 weeks at a time.

Classical Ballet Technique

Tuesday

6:15 -7:30pm

Intermediate and Advanced Levels with at least 5 years of technical ballet training (the term training is not referring to casual ballet student).  Note: Exceptions are made for dedicated dancers.

This class is a triad of  Vaganova Method, Chechetti Science and Balanchine Ballet

The phrase I like to use to define my technical class composition is:

'Structure compelled to support while releasing impeding confinements.'

Barre/Centre Barre, Centre work, Adagio, Petite Allegro and Grand Allegro

Vaganova's syllabus builds on a carefully developed progression in which the "basic" or "preparatory" forms are mastered before the dancer moves on to more difficult forms. This can be understood as a codified technical approach when taught by qualified teachers following the syllabus closely. The syllabus is founded upon the idea that when a dancer is introduced to a step, he or she will have developed the correct strength in foundation in order for their steps and movements to be successful. It is understood that this strength-building requires time and consistent hard work. Wikipedia.org

“The Cecchetti system is professional, logical and its technical demands are totally revealing. (its) ports de bras are known far and wide for their simplicity, purity of line and their sheer beauty.” — excerpt from Miss O: My Life in Dance by kind permission of Betty Oliphant, C.C., LL.
